Last month Stuart Eydmann and I attended the North Atlantic Fiddle Convention in Aberdeen, a wonderful feast of music and dance. I was especially pleased to be part of the conference strand of the festival, where I gave a paper on Dumfries & Galloway fiddle music titled ‘Happy Frank: The surprising fiddle connection between Aberdeen and Dumfries’. It dealt with the life and work of Frank Gilruth, whose collection we’ve been studying. Great opportunity to share our research and make stimulating connections with other scholars from Scotland and beyond, as well as enjoying some tunes together!
